See also: Auto-Rotate option under <a href="mapopolis.htm#Gpo">GPS Settings</a> <hr> <a name="Ifb"></a>Tapping for Location Information <ul> <li>Tap on or near a street to get its name and the house number at the tapped location. <li>You can also tap landmarks, parks, waterways, or facilities to get names and additional information. <li>Tap the information box to remove it. <li>Tap and Hold the information box for <a href="mapopolis.htm#Pum">Pop-up Menu</a> functions. </ul> <hr> <a name="pum"></a>To display the Location Pop-up Menu, tap a location then Tap and Hold its Information Box. Then select: <ul> <li>Set Start to make this the start point for a <a href="mapopolis.htm#Dir">Route</a>. <li>Set Destination to set the destination for a Route. <li>Route To to set the destination and immediately plot the route. <li>Route Through see <a href="mapopolis.htm#Rtr">Modifying Route</a> <li>Set Origin to make this the <a href="mapopolis.htm#Org">Search Origin</a> for finding places. <li>Add Landmark to define this address as a landmark. <li>Add to <a href="mapopolis.htm#FFav">Favorites</a> <li>Edit, Move or Delete a user defined landmark <li>Open or Close Map if region/county icon is tapped to open (close) corresponding map. </ul> <hr> <a name="Detail"></a>Adjusting the Detail Level <ul> <li>Tap the plus and minus symbols on the menu bar to increase or decrease the level of detail shown. </ul> <hr> <a name="Dis"></a>To Measure the Distance between two points <ol> <li>Both points must be in view on the screen. <li>Tap Tools > Distance > Direct or By Street <li>Drag the stylus from the first point to the second point. <li>If measuring distance by street, drag the stlylus along streets. You can back out part of the path by retracing backwards without lifting the stylus. <li>The <a href="mapopolis.htm#Dir">Driving Directions</a> feature can also be used to get the distance and driving time between any two points. </ol> <hr> <a name="Finding"></a>Finding Places <a href="mapopolis.htm#FAdd">Find a Street or Address</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#FInt">Find a Street Intersection</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#FPl">Find a Business or Landmark</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#Qfd">Find Nearby Places</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#FCta">Find a Contact Address</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#FGpl">Find GPS Position</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#FCoo">Find Specific Coordinates</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#FFav">Adding 'Favorites' to Find Menu</a> <hr> <a name="Mpt"></a>Maplets - Defining Landmarks A Maplet is a map file (created automatically under the name Landmarks.mlp) containing user defined landmarks. To add a landmark use the Add Landmark menu option from the <a href="mapopolis.htm#Pum">Pop-up Menu</a> for an existing location, or <ol> <li>Move the map to show the neighborhood in which you want to place a landmark. <li>Tap Tools > Maplets > Add Location. <li>Tap the desired location. <li>Fill in the name and optional data and tap OK </ol> To show the list of maplet file contents tap: Tools > Maplets > Show Locations. You can change or delete any item listed. See also <a href="mapopolis.htm#ELoc">Changing a Landmark</a> <hr> <a name="ELoc"></a>Changing a Landmark To adjust the position of a maplet landmark: <ol> <li>Tap the landmark on the map <li>Tap and Hold the information box which appears <li>Tap Move in the Pop-up menu <li>Tap the new position </ol> In addition you can tap Delete from the Pop-up menu to remove the landmark, or Edit to change the Name, Category, or Icon. See <a href="mapopolis.htm#Glg">GPS Data Logging</a> </ul> <hr> <a name="Pgo"></a>Program Settings <ul> <li>Check Auto Add to Favorites to include recently accessed locations in the Find Menu. Uncheck to explicitly control what goes into this list. (see <a href="mapopolis.htm#FFav">'Favorites'</a>) </ul> <hr> <a name="Clr"></a>Adjusting Colors Activate either of the two sets of colors (nominally called "Normal" and "Night") using the buttons at the top. To change a color, tap the desired category and adjust its Red,Green and Blue values. <hr> <a name="Snd"></a>Sounds For each of the listed events, select any wave file found in the windows system directory, or NONE to disable the audio alert. Check the Speed Alert box to get an audio alert when the speed goes above the selected value in mph or km/h (requires GPS) To minimize distortion, try adjusting the volume control under system settings before setting the mapopolis volume control all the way up. <hr> <a name="Hwb"></a>Hardware Buttons First press the actual button (or tap a button number), then view or change the function. <ul> <li>Check Use Global to make the buttons Mapopolis hot keys when it's active, otherwise overrides are effective only for the map display. <li>The button function: Route to Favorite generates a route to a predefined location from your current GPS position. <li>The button function <a href="mapopolis.htm#Stb">Voiced Status Update</a> is useful if you are using GPS navigation. <li>You can usually use the Up/Down and Action buttons to select from a submenu or list without having to tap the screen. </ul> <hr> <a name="Mail"></a>Please send questions, comments, or suggestions to: <center>support@mapopolis.com</center> The current program version is <center>4.42</center> <hr> <a name="FromPC"></a>To Copy a Map from your PC <ul> <li>To download any map from your Desktop PC, just double click on the map file under (the desktop) File Explorer. <li>If the mapopolis map installer has not been installed on your desktop PC, you can copy maps manually as follows: <ol> <li>Open ActiveSync and click Explore. <li>Open the desktop folder containing the maps and drag these files from the Desktop PC folder to a Pocket PC folder. </ol> </ul> <hr> <a name="MPop"></a> From the map list: Tools > Choose Map tap and hold a map name, then choose: <ul> <li>Delete Map - to delete the file. <li>Load in Memory - if checked, loads map on card into RAM (may improve performance in some cases). If the folder is changed this option reverts to unchecked. </ul> <hr> <a name="Open"></a>Choosing Maps to Open <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Choose Map <li>Maps currently open are shown highlighted. <li>Tap to change the selection then press OK. </ol> Use the Selection menu as follows: <ul> <li>Single Select: Only the last map tapped is selected <li>Multiple Select: Tap map to toggle its selection state </ul> Notes <ul> <li>For optimal performance, especially in street/place searches, don't open any more maps than you need. <li>Check the box at the bottom to include all maps contiguous to or overlapping the selected maps. <li>If a specific folder is selected, mapopolis will always look for maps only in that folder. <li>See also <a href="mapopolis.htm#MPop">Map Pop-up Menu</a> </ul> <hr> <a name="Org"></a> Search Origin The search origin is used as the reference point for ordering by (or showing) distances when <a href="mapopolis.htm#Finding">finding an address or place</a> Tap Origin in the Menu Bar to use the current GPS position or a fixed location (see also <a href="mapopolis.htm#Pum">Pop-up Menu</a>) <hr> <a name="FAdd"></a>Find a Street or Address <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Find > Address or Street <li>Enter a Street Name to find only a street, or both a Number and Street Name to find an address. <li>To Recall a previously entered address, do not enter a house number, but just tap the arrow on the Street Name box and select from the drop down list. <li>If there is more than one match, select the one you want and tap OK. </ol> Notes <ul> <li>To limit the search to an area or city, select from the drop list at the top of the panel. 'Within 25 miles' (40 km) means from the current <a href="mapopolis.htm#Org">search origin</a> <li>The additional line in each item shows the distance and heading from the search origin. When ordering by distance (using the View menu) only the nearest 1000 hits are shown. </ul> <hr> <a name="FPl"></a>Find a Business or Landmark <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Find > Place or Business <li>Select a Category from the list at the top or 'Any Category' for all. <li>Enter a name or part of a name in the Location Name box. <li>If there is more than one match, select the one(s) you want and tap OK. </ol> Notes <ul> <li>To Recall a previously selected location, select from the drop down list under the Location Name box. <li>By default only the last item tapped is selected (single select mode). To allow more than one, or all matching items to be selected, use the Selection menu at the bottom of the panel. <li>Use the View menu to select the details shown with each item and the ordering method: Alphabetical or by Distance from the <a href="mapopolis.htm#Org">Search Origin</a>. <li>To limit the search to an area or city, select from the list at the top of the panel. 'Within 25 miles' (40 km) means from the search origin. </ul> <hr> <a name="Qfd"></a> To show all, or route to, a nearby point of interest by type: <ul> <li>Tap Tools > Find > All Places by Type <li>Tap the icon for the desired category. <li>Tap any landmark icon from the map display for additional information. </ul> Notes <ul> <li>Use Radius in the menu to adjust the search scope. <li>To customize the categories shown, tap and hold any icon then tap Change Category. <li>To immediately route to the closest location (for example a hospital, etc.), tap and hold the icon, then tap Route to Closest. GPS must be active. </ul> <hr> <a name="Stb"></a>Status Update Button To create an audio status button: <ul> <li>Assign one of the hardware buttons (<a href="mapopolis.htm#Hwb">Settings > Hardware Buttons</a>) to Voiced Status Update. <li>Check the information you want to hear under <a href="mapopolis.htm#Nvo">Settings > Navigation Options</a> </ul> You can skip over any item of information by pressing the button again. <hr> <a name="FInt"></a>Find a Street Intersection <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Find > Street Intersection <li>Select the First Street name and tap OK (See also <a href="mapopolis.htm#FAdd">Finding a Street</a>) <li>Optionally, enter a string into Second Street Name to list only streets containing the string. <li>Select the desired intersecting street and tap OK </ol> Notes <ul> <li>To reverse the geographical listing order tap Going East (or South etc.) a second time. </ul> <hr> <a name="FCta"></a>To locate an address from the Contacts Database (Address Book): <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Find > Contact Address <li>Select a name from the list and tap OK <li>The address appears at the center of the map marked by the house icon. </ol> Notes <ul> <li>Enter the first few letters of a name in the box to narrow the list. <li>If the location cannot be uniquely determined, the Find Address panel is displayed instead of the map. </ul> <hr> <a name="FGpl"></a> To recenter the map at the current GPS location and resume <a href="mapopolis.htm#Gpo">Auto-Scrolling</a>, either: <ul> <li>Tap Tools > Find > GPS Position <li>Tap anywhere in the Navigation Pane (if displayed) </ul> A beep means there's no GPS fix. <hr> <a name="FCoo"></a>Find Location by Coordinates <ul> <li>Tap Tools > Find > Latitude/Longitude </ul> The coordinates of the current center of the view area are shown. To center the map at another location, change the coordinates and tap OK. If you want to add a maplet location at the specified coordinates, tap Add Landmark instead. If the specified location is outside all open maps, the closest point within a map is shown. <hr> <a name="FFav"></a>You can add up to eight locations to the Find Menu by: <ul> <li>Tapping and holding the <a href="mapopolis.htm#Ifb">Information Box</a> for a map location (street address or landmark) then selecting Add to Favorites from the Pop-up menu. </ul> Uncheck the Auto Add to Favorites box in <a href="mapopolis.htm#Set">Program Options</a> to make sure that only locations you explicitly add appear in the find menu. See also: <a href="mapopolis.htm#OFav">Organize Favorites</a> <hr> <a name="OFav"></a>To change the order, or delete items from the favorites list, tap Tools > Find > Favorites , then tap Organize <ol> <li>Tap an item to select it (mark with a bullet) <li>Tap Move Up, Move Down or Delete <li>Tap Done when finished </ol> <hr> <a name="Dnv"></a>Directions <a href="mapopolis.htm#Dir">Getting Driving Directions</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#Rtr">Modifying a route</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#Srt">Saving a route</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#Rrt">Recalling a route</a> Navigation <a href="mapopolis.htm#Grg">GPS Navigation</a> <a href="mapopolis.htm#Nvp">The Navigation Pane</a> </menu> <hr> <a name="Grg"> The GPS Navigation feature for Navigator maps is activated whenever a route has been found and GPS is active. See also: <ul> <li><a href="mapopolis.htm#Dir">Getting Driving Directions</a> <li><a href="mapopolis.htm#Gps">Using GPS</a>. <li><a href="mapopolis.htm#Rto">Routing Options</a> <li><a href="mapopolis.htm#Nvo">Navigation Options</a> </ul> Notes: <ul> <li>To suspend audio and visual prompting uncheck the menu item Tools > Navigation > Active Route Guidance <li>Voice prompts begin approximately 1 minute before the next turn. <li>The word next means the turn is at the next intersection. <li>Distances to the next turn are approximate and could be off by fifty meters or more. <li>If you can safely look, refer to the diagram and large street names on the screen (see <a href="mapopolis.htm#Nvp">Navigation Pane</a>) <li>The Chime sounds after making each turn successfully. </ul> Treat the real time directions as suggestions and don't be concerned about going off route or making detours. Directions are automatically updated based on your current location. <hr> <a name="Nvp"> The Navigation Pane can be raised or hidden by either: <ul> <li>Tapping the icon at the right end of the menu bar <li>Pressing the action (Enter) button. </ul> Use Tools > Navigation to choose one of the following: The Route Step pane shows one step in the route. Use the cursor arrow keys to go forward or backward one step in the route: <ul> <li>Up or Right key to show Next <li>Down or Left key to show Previous </ul> The horizontal arrows show route steps in North up orientation and the vertical arrows use the Driving Direction as up. The Navigation pane gives information about the next turn if <a href="mapopolis.htm#Grg">GPS Navigation</a> is active. Press the Up button to show the next route step. Return by pressing the Down button. <a name="Pdp">The Pilot Data Pane shows your current speed and heading. If there is a target destination, its straight line direction (bearing) and distance (range) are shown. The compass pointer shows its direction relative to the current direction of motion (up). The target destination is either the directions destination (see <a href="mapopolis.htm#SetPoint">Setting Destination</a>) or if not set, the last location found (see <a href="mapopolis.htm#Finding">Finding Places</a>). <hr> <a name="Dir"></a>Driving Directions <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Navigation > Find Route. <li>Set or change the Start Point or Destination by tapping its Choose Location button and selecting one of the methods. See also <a href="mapopolis.htm#SetPoint">Setting the Start Point or Destination</a> <li>Tap OK. </ol> Notes <ul> <li>You can step through the route on the map using the Up/Down arrow button with the <a href="mapopolis.htm#Nvp">navigation pane</a> raised. <li>To display or save the directions as a text file, tap Tools > Navigation > Show Directions. <li>See also: <a href="mapopolis.htm#Rtr">Modifying a route</a> <li>See also: <a href="mapopolis.htm#Srt">Saving a route</a> </ul> <hr> <a name="Rtr"></a>Modifying a Route <ol> <li>Both <a href="mapopolis.htm#SetPoint">Start and Destination</a> must be set first. <li>To include a street segment in the route, tap the Street on the map, then tap and hold the Information Box, then select Route Through. <li>To Remove a Route-through point, tap the circle marking it, then tap and hold the information box and select Remove Route Point <li>Add points beginning where the route first differs from the desired one and work toward the destination. </ol> Notes <ul> <li>Use only through streets on the way. For multiple stop or round trips, please plan separate routes instead. <li>If you go or start off route, you may not be rerouted through some points. <li>Changing either of the end points removes all route-through points. <li><a href="mapopolis.htm#Srt">Save the route</a> after creating. </ul> <hr> <a name="Srt"></a> To Save a Route after setting the start and destination tap Tools > Navigation > Find Route > Save. Notes <ul> <li>If <a href="mapopolis.htm#Rtr">Route Thru</a> points have been added, do not alter the start or destination before saving. <li>Only the information needed to regenerate the route is actually saved. It may not be possible if the original maps have been replaced. <li>To save a Destination only, select 'Use GPS Position' for the start point, then tap Save. <li>See also <a href="mapopolis.htm#Rrt">Recall Route</a>. </ul> <hr> <a name="Rrt"></a> To Recall a <a href="mapopolis.htm#Srt">Saved Route</a> <ol> <li>Tap Tools > Navigation > Find Route > Recall <li>For quick access, assign 'Recall Route' to a <a href="mapopolis.htm#Set">hardware button</a>. <li>Select the route or destination and tap OK. </ol> <ul> <li>If there's a GPS fix, the first entry found with a start point within 200 meters will be initially selected. <li>Delete unneeded routes to save memory and avoid clutter. </ul> <hr> <a name="SetPoint"></a> You can set the Start Point or Destination by any of the following methods: <ul> <li>Tap Tools > Navigation > Find Route then tap the appropriate Choose Location button. <li>Tap a location on the map, tap and hold the information box showing its address, then select Set Start, Set Destination, or Route To from the pop-up menu. <li>Tap and hold any item from the list of matching locations in the Find Street or Address panel, or Find Place or Business panel, then select Set Start or Set Destination from the pop-up menu. </ul> <hr> <a name="Gps"></a>GPS This feature requires a GPS receiver supplying NMEA 0183 standard data through a serial port. GPS data is available only when the receiver has a position fix. The Current Location icon on the map shows your current location and direction of motion. Tap Tools > GPS to either: <ul> <li>Start or Stop GPS <li>Show GPS data <li>Change GPS Options <li>Show <a href="mapopolis.htm#Glg">GPS Log</a> </ul> The View menu (at the bottom of the panel) determines which of the following two displays are shown: Data Display: The compass shows directions relative to your current heading (up). The range value and the red line show the distance and direction of the destination (to set the destination see <a href="mapopolis.htm#Pdp">Pilot Data Pane</a>). Coordinates are shown as degrees.minutes.thousandths. Satellite Display: The approximate locations of satellites are shown with the center of the circle representing zenith and the edge of the circle the horizon (top is North). The numbers in the boxes are the signal strengths. To change GPS options, tap <a href="mapopolis.htm#Gpo">Settings</a> in the menu bar. <hr> <a name="Gpo"></a>GPS Settings <ul> <li>Port and Baud Rate: If you don't know, select Auto-Detect and the actual value will be filled in when the GPS receiver is first used. For Bluetooth use the Outbound COM port shown under system Settings > Bluetooth > Serial Port. <li>Disable Auto Power Off: Disable auto power off while GPS is running <li>Auto-Scroll: Automatically position map to keep current location in view. <li>Auto-Rotate: Rotate North so top is in direction of motion <li>Auto-Zoom: Adjusts zoom level (1 to 3) based on location of next turn, or if no route active, on speed class of road. <li>Center View Forward: Position GPS icon near bottom of screen (only with auto-rotate on) <li>Lock To Road: Adjust GPS icon to nearest position on road/route <li>For GPS Log options see <a href="mapopolis.htm#Glg">GPS Data Logging</a>. </ul> <hr> <a name="Glg"></a>GPS Log To enable data logging, check the Log Data box under Settings > GPS Options. The log is a fixed size wraparound file (new data overlays older data) but you can clear it at any time (for example at the beginning of a trip) by tapping Clear Log <ul> <li>To show the log data as a trail on the map, check the box under Settings > Map Features <li>To show the log data in list format, Save, or Play Back the log file, tap Tools > GPS > <a href="mapopolis.htm#Shl">Show Log</a>. </ul> <hr> <a name="Shl"></a>Tap Tools > GPS > Show Log Use View > Detail/Summary to show either all data, or trip summaries between stopping points of 10 minutes or more. For either mode: <ul> <li>Tap select any line and then tap OK to show the location on the map. <li>You can play back log data from any point (i.e. simulate a GPS data stream to test or demo the navigation system) by tapping any entry and tapping Play Back. <li>Tap Save or Restore to copy the file to a backup, or to export the data to a text file. </ul> <hr> <a name="Rto"></a>Routing Options <ul> <li>Quick vs. Exhaustive: The middle position is normally sufficient to find the best possible route. If speed of calculation becomes an issue (e.g. during auto-rerouting) move to the left. <li>Select Fastest to minimize time and fuel, or Shortest for distance. </ul> <hr> <a name="Nvo"></a>Navigation Options <ul> <li>Large Format - Large turn diagram and text for easy visibility (Recommended). <li>Show ETA - Include the ETA strip in the navigation pane. <li>Show Automatically - Raise the pane on each change in the Route Step or GPS fix status. <li>Recite Step Text - If checked, using the arrow keys to cycle through route steps will cause the step to be spoken - intended for users without GPS. <li>Start - Time interval before turn to start issuing voice prompts. <li>At - Repetition interval for voice prompts.
